The one about the yearbook argument over christmas

I was cleaning the inbox of my e-mail account and chanced upon these e-mail exchanges. Jim's reply is a classic to me. Of course, things have patched up between them. But reading these all over again cracks me up.

from necisto

HighSchool 2002 yearbook commitee! any updates on our "REALLY BEAUTIFUL" highshool yearbook? I am really concerned about its slow paced production and i have heard some reasons why its not out yet. I hope none of them are true or related in anyway. this might be exagerrating but do we want our yearbook out another 4 years or even a decade? come on! Some of us will already receieve our college yearbook by jan or feb! Moreover, some of those who i asked sponsorship from have been asking me about what happend to our yearbook and their money. It's very embarrasing!

I plead to you since it's christmas to finish this simple project. Also, please give me as well as our batchmates the "true" details on what caused the delay. It our right as well as the sponsors to know.

I hope for you soonest reply and immediate action regarding this matter.

from charissa:

hi, actually, as ive already mentioned for everyone to know nalang rin, it's not with the the yearbook committee anymore. its with the printers as of last update from the admin of jca...

merry xmas.

From Johnny who hired a writer for this:
i would like to inquire about the developments concerning our year book, i've already recieved my college year book even before my highschool year book and our company (TGPI) Tone Guide Press Incorporated as sponsor is wondering about the developments of this situation, it has been 4 years and i'm already about to graduate without my highschool yr. book,Seniorball pic, and my highschool Graduation pic., i appeal to those who are in control of the project to apply a solution in order to hasten things.

From Glenn:

nes at janny ako ndi ako yearbook committee at wala naman akong malaking naitulong sa paggawa ng yearbook pero wag mo na titirahin ang yearbook natin ok? oo matagal nga din nga talaga ang paglalakad ng yearbook pero wag nyo palabasin na hindi ito binigyan ng pansin ng committee. kahit ako hindi ako parte ng committee kusang loob akong tumulong sa paraang alam ko dahil gusto kong matapos ang yearbook. nes at janny issue na ito ng publication ng yearbook at hindi na sa kamay ng yearbook committe at design kaya wag nyo na tirahin yang paglalakad at lalung-lalu na ang disenyo nya (dahil ito ang ginawa ko). anyway nes, dont worry. it's gonna be "REALLY BEAUTIFUL". it's been four years already. di pa ba kayo pagod magwhine? dapat nagreklamo kayo 2-3 years ako like i did. lol. QUIT WHINING.-glen
ps. wag nyo tirahin ang paglalakad malapit na yan matapos.
pps. wag nyo lalung tirahin ang magiging itsura ng yearbook ok?

From Cathy:

merry christmas!!! guys... about the yearbook... just wait a little longer... the "simple project" is not as simple as it seems... there is a lot that goes on to making the yearbook and the yearbook committee is not the only one involved... i've seen the dummy.. and the design and the layout is really beautiful.. yeah.. without the "...". we've been patient enough to wait for almost four years.. i'm sure we're patient enough to wait for a few more months... right right? no? right? righhhtttt... if you guys want, we can bug the printers about it.. whatchathink? merry christmas guys.. merry merry christmas.

From Jeco:

Totoo it's taken sa shameful amount of time to finish this thing and no excuses mali namin. If you want explanations mahaba siya including missing photos by the publisher, production line ng previous yearbooks sa jubilee, plus write-ups that we had to make kasi hindi gusto ng board yung nakasulat. But nonetheless mali pa rin namin. I've seen the initial printing na and the first set will be out by January. It was what Mrs. Bumatay told us. I appreciate the people concerned about the project including the parents especially the mothers of the students that are the asking me about the yearbook. If you want to comment on anything my number is 09178937115.Sasagutin ko tanong ninyo.

From Johnny:
first of all i would like to thank charissa ching, jericson co, catherine see for giving a COURTEOUS reply to my inquiries. they've presented their reply with utmost integrity and respect, they faced the situation like true leaders and i admit i admire what they did...the purpose of the letter i've made was (1)to inquire about the developments of the yr. book (2)to find out the reasons for the delay and (3)to appeal in making a solution to hasten things. as you can read in my letter.now that i have found out thanks to Jersicson's COURTEOUS reply i am already satisfied with the anwers he and the committee provided.i was merely stating facts about my life this past 4 yrs that i am about to graduate and and that i've already received my college year book.right now the issue at hand is not about the yr. book any longer it is now a question of respect, my letter was inquiring politely on behalf of Tone Guide Press Incorporated about the developments of the said yr. book and you answer "QUIT WHINING hindi pa ba kayo pagud?" i think that's below the belt!!!! and anyone concerned such as the sponsors or people that are waiting patiently wouldn't like that kind of answer!!!ps. COURTESY PARE COURTESY WAG BASTOS PAG MATINONG NAGTATANONG!!!!

From Necisto:
Cha, Cathy, and Jeco, thank you for updating us with our yearbook. I know all of you are taking time to do this with your preoccupied time and i appreciate what you have done. Its good to hear that its already with the printing and it's comming out soon. Hope there's no problem regarding the printing. Keep us posted.

By the way, Glenn please be more courteuous next time. ok? I know the yearbook is great so don't be offended with what i said. We feel insulted with what you said in your reply and my stand goes the same with janny and other people. I think you just went too far saying "its been four years already. di pa ba kayo pagod magwhine? dapat nagreklamo kayo 2-3 years ako like i did lol. QUIT WHINING." You're telling us as if we did not care about our yearbook years back, and the fact is that we did. Fortunately, we'll be cool since someone appologized for you. Respeto nalang sasusunod.

Thanks

Nes

From Jim:

dude, while glenn stepped on some toes with hisremarks, you didn't really do yourself any favors withyour opening letter. "really beautiful?"... that'scondescending, patronizing and downright insulting. first, you're talking to your peers, your batchmates. second, this is a yahoo group site, not a boardroom. To talk to everyone in this manner just makes you looklike an ass. oh and if you all agree that glenninsulted you, then we all kind of agree that youinsulted us first.

The mother of all replies, From PUA:
Hi,Sagot ko lang about the Seniorball pic. As far as i know, all the pics havebeen distributed already. If you had a couple pic, chances are i handed itto your partner. But I'm 100% sure that all the senior ball pics are nolonger with me. I remember that I handed the pics during the graduationrehearsals ....four years ago hehe. All i have with me are group pics whichI had paid for myself =pBut, i'll try to ask the Photo Company if they still have copies of thepic...just in case. But im really positive that I don't have your picsanymore and that I have given them already. But i'll try checking ah..And just like what glenn, cathy and cha said...kaunting buwan nalang..ithink so kaya ito let's just be patient. Ako honestly i haven't beencontributing ...at all to the team..but i can say that they (those who'vereally helped) have done a good job in layouting/designing/editing.Anyway have a HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY PEACEFUL AND BLESSED NEW YEAR!!Jonathan

It's a sports week

Well it was definitely an eventful sporting week (if you consider WWE as a sport), so here's some of what happened...

NCAA men's: As I'm typing this, Florida is up by 15 and there's about 27 seconds left. Out of the 4 final four teams, Florida was my least favorite. I didn't root against them with passion like I do rooting against Duke or Boston College, but I kind of wanted George Mason, LSU or UCLA to win more. But, I'm glad for Coach Billy Donovan and Joakim Noah so good for them. UCLA just couldn't score against the Florida defence and Humphrey just kept lighting UCLA and George Mason up all over the place with dagger after dagger. The weird stat about him is that he shoots 47% percent from the 3 point arc but he only shoots 52% from the free throw line so I don't know what's up with that. Anyway, next year is gonna be all Ohio State and North Carolina because they're getting the best recruits so that should be fun.

NCAA women's: UNC lost in the final four match against Maryland only because Ivory Latta injured her knee 7 minutes into the game. She returned and just wasn't the same. It's a shame because she's so fun to watch, she's basically the female Allen Iverson. She plays like a guy and it's fun to see her move against the women players who play like girls. It's a shame because UNC and Duke would have went at it in the finals but I think UNC and Maryland have the bigger rivalry in women's basketball. They seem to not like each other for some reason.

NBA:Two of my three teams are killing the league. New Jersey is riding a 12 game winning streak and Cleveland has won 8 straight. Here's a list of the top teams New Jersey has beaten for their streak: Dallas, Detroit, the Lakers (they're not really a top team, but suck on that, Kobe), Phoenix (aww, but someone had to win), Memphis and Miami. That's basically all the top teams. Lebron James, meanwhile, was just part of the best game of the season. Faced against Dwyane Wade and the Heat, the two stars traded basket after basket. Wade finished with 44, 9 and 8, while Lebron killed with 47, 12 and 10. Over the last 5 games, Lebron is averaging close to a triple-double (9.8 assists). Aside from all that, Barkley, Dominique and Dumars also got inducted to the hall of fame.

And finally,
WWE: Wrestlemania was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. Or maybe it was just a boring Monday night, I can't tell.

What I liked about it: Cameo by the million dollar man. That rocked. He even did his bit where he offers to pay someone (in this case, Eugene) to do some silly activity where he ended with his phrase "everybody's got a price with the million dollar man" followed by a hilarious fake laugh. The pirate made a cameo too heh.

Kurt Angle was great. He's smackdown's top performer right now. For most of the triple threat match, the crowd was cheering more for him than obvious fan favorite Rey Mysterio (who ended up winning). Trish Stratus was great, but she injured her knee in the end (she lost, by the way) and had to be helped out back. The money in the bank ladder match (RVD won) and the triple threat match were the best matches. The Cena/HHH match was alright. Oh and HHH and Shawn Michaels (on different matches) both did the DX "suck it" thing. So maybe there's a comeback for that, which would rock.

What I hated: Carlito barely did anything, so that sucked. They glitzed up Cena and HHHs entrance for Wrestlemania which ended up sucking (HHH looked like conan the barbarian and Cena had a machine gun.. which.. what?) and since I was looking forward to Cena's entrance, I was disappointed. Bret Hart still wouldn't show up for the hall of fame inductees presentation. The match with the undertaker was boring (he won). The less said about the bogeyman, the better. The pillow fight match was so un-hot. I didn't enjoy the Shawn Michaels/McMahon thing as much.

What was interesting: John Cena is an interesting champion. He seems to have the aura of a WWE champion, but the fans really keep on booing him. I had to look it up on the net to find out why. The reason, apparently, is that Cena is a crappy wrestler. He's a good speaker and performer, but he can't wrestle in-ring. Apparently, the die-hard fans can tell, and while they wouldn't care if he's just a middle performer, now that he's the top guy, the fans expect more especially when he's following the legacies of Stone Cold, The Rock, HHH and so on, who are excellent in-ring wrestlers. So in the main event, the fans were booing Cena with passion. HHH, who was a bad guy, was cheered so much that the announcers couldn't hide it anymore and were saying that it was a road game for Cena which didn't make sense because HHH isn't from Chicago where wrestlemania was held.

Overall: For a pay per view, it was entertaining and good. It being my first paid pay per view, it was an excellent experience. Again, it might just be a boring night. This is the most I've written about wrestling in my life, so I hope the only time I do this again would be wrestlemania. I don't mind this as a once a year thing, just not a daily thing cause I sooooo don't want to be that guy in the video who's crying while saying "wrestling is still real to me".

And so, Florida won, UNC women's lost, New Jersey keeps on winning and Lebron is in another level. Kurt Angle rocked and Cena sucked, Trish still looks good and Carlito is still cool. A good Monday night, overall.

50 First Tears

No, I'm not crying now. I just wanted to put that title there hahaha.

I just watched 50 First Dates ago for the nth time. And I must admit, it almost made me cry again.

No, I think I did have tears on my eyes at that time.

Phooey.

I remember the first time I watched 50 First Dates, it also made me cry.

Something about the ending makes me feel good. Its the ultimate feel good movie.

I'm sounding like a gay fag right now.

Through The Panes

Through The Panes

How every evening, he would anticipate her window panes opening up, her fingers gently tapping the frame (where he would imagine where he was instead, beside her, getting a glimpse of everything from her perspective), opening her room's full bodied window.

He would opt to hide every morning in the shadows of his own room, as a result of being in waking for the whole night, until the morning chirps of the sparrows beckon him to call it a day (or night). His bed, (now streaked with the morning rays coming from his grilled windows) with lights from the sky seemed hesitant, of whether to accompany him or not.

The woman through the other window (although he had the chance of knowing her name, he would dare not mention it) would move between the small square panes of her now open windows. Shadow fleeting by, it's a most peculiar feeling. Like a gust that had just brushed by, her presence was felt.

For a moment, the curtains would be draped again. He wonders what could she be doing on the other side, and his only thought was of her ruffling through the pages of her readings. After all, September rains tend to be gloomy although he doesn't think it to be so. Absorbed, she would drape the curtains. Rationalization for the comforts him.

He compares her to the air - unbounded, free-spirited, and enigmatic. She takes you where she wants to go. But he also knows that beneath the strong winds lie a gentle breeze.

If she is the air, then, he wishes to be the water (he thought of this while looking through his windows, with nothing but the draped curtains returning his gaze). Like water, he wishes to be her complement.

He can start to feel the raindrops getting bigger and bigger by the resounding sound of its patter.

His fingers refused to reach out the window, into the other house where the draped windows teased him. His slender fingers, the tips of them, trembled, with his veins throbbing like a flickering candle slowly losing its light. The rain would now drum harder against his roof. The sound of drumming against his head. The only sound that he hears.

The woman's panes, that he saw with great despair, were being slowly opened again exposing perhaps her whole room. Maybe not. Maybe just enough for him and her to exchange polite glimpses at each other. But the rain now flowed like a great curtain and his window panes were beginning to fog.

As the rain was easing to a slight drizzle, the man's hands were damp with cold sweat. His knees could barely hold him as he crawled from the bed to the floor and tried to stand up to take his final peek.

Between the streaks of the faint raindrops he thought he saw a silhouette of someone standing there, the woman, right in the middle of her window's frame. In his mind, a self-dialogue as unfolding. A self-dialogue that he would like to keep to himself. When he finally looked up to the woman's face, he saw her, smiling, staring back at him.

For the moment, he felt content. He felt content that the woman through the panes smiled back. It made him happy.

New group blog layout

Obsessive compulsion kicked in again.

Here's the new group blog layout. Tagal gawin ni webmastur Pierre eh.

Umm. The shoutbox's still green, maybe p3 can do something about that. And oh yeah, I'm having problems with the tables. Everything's looking good when viewed from IE but the tables go screwy when it's viewed using firefox. argh. Oi p3 paedit heh.

Oh yeah, the header changes everytime you hit the refresh/revisit. cool.

April fools

lalabas yearbook sa april 25.

hahahaha

I spit in the face of people who don't want to be cool

Wrestlemania is this Sunday (monday to us).

Yeah, I know. It's wrestling crap. But hey, when you're here in quiet NZ with not much to do, you start appreciating mindless entertainment. So yeah, I guess I've seen more WWE here than I would if I was back home. And yes, I'll be wasting money to buy Wrestlemania on pay per view this monday only because a) Wrestlemania only comes once a year and b) I've never paid for pay per view ever and I always wanted to do it.

So okay, here are the matches.

The main event? For Raw, John Cena takes on HHH for the first time for the WWE title. and for Smackdown, it's a triple threat matchup for the World Heavyweight title with Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton battling for the honor.

The other matches include Kane/Big show vs Carlito/Chris Masters, Some boogeyman dude vs Booker T and his "wife", Trish Stratus vs Mickie James, Shawn Michaels vs Vince McMahon, the Undertake vs Mark Henry, Mick Foley vs Edge, Chris Benoit vs JBL, and of course, the Playboy pillow fight between Torrie and Candice Michelle. Oh and a money in a bank match with six losers from Raw and Smackdown.

What am I excited for: Well, not much actually. I really enjoy Cena's entrance music so that's probably the most I'm excited about which isn't really complimenting the whole thing. I really think this whole main event with HHH being the bad guy is sooo played out because I remember when I was watching regularly with the Rock, HHH was also the bad guy. Why couldn't they get another bad guy for this, I don't know. Anyway I'm excited for that only because of the entrance music and entrance of John Cena, that's it. Oh and Cena sometimes looks like trying a little too much with way overacting with the facial expressions. It's kind of funny and boring at the same time.

I'm also excited for the Trish Stratus and Mickie James match. They really made Trish look like a champion and she's got the aura of a champion thing down now. Remember when she was with T&A and she was getting bodyslammed to a table by the dudleys?

I'm also a little excited for the playboy pillow fight for obvious reasons. But then again, I'm not really excited. I'm just not bored about it, I guess. For one, I'm not really attracted to anyone (if they had Stacy Keibler, Lita, Trish or that new Ashley chick there, it'd be a different story) and two, these matches are usually awkwardly done.

Oh and I'm really really excited for anything involving Carlito. He's cool heh.

The triple threat looks alright only because Kurt Angle looks really cool these days. He's got the deranged overcompetitive champion down good. He's basically playing Ken Shamrock, in case you didnt notice.

I really hope Stephanie McMahon pops in there too.

What I'm not excited for: Old timers who are still there. Ric Flair, HHH, Vince McMahon, Mick Foley, Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, I'm talking about you. Also, Mark Henry on wrestlemania? Wasnt he the dude who made out with a tranny before? I mean Ric Flair is freakin 500 years old. I'm tired of anything with Vince, Shane McMahon involved. We've been having Vince screws someone plots since the 90s. Shawn Michaels reminds me of Steve Nash so I can tolerate him. The Undertaker is in a casket match... Again. Mick Foley.. well it's sad. He shouldnt really be wrestling anymore but I read that his ambition is to be the United Nations ambassador to the Philippines so I will have to tolerate him for patriotic reasons lol.

Oh and I really really want to punch Randy Orton in the face. Either he's a really good actor which I dont think so or he's really that annoying in real life.

What the WWE needs: The Rock. I miss the Rock. Oh and the pirate guy. Did you know they have a pirate on the smackdown roster? He even does the swinging on a rope entrance and says Arrrr. He and Carlito should just team up and rule the WWE. Oh and Batista. They really should do the Cena vs Batista Wrestlemania match. Maybe I'm just feeling bad cause JP Batista's Gonzaga choked against UCLA.

Why am I watching again: I don't know. After more than 500 words of pseudo-analysis, the only reason I've come up to watch this thing are these: Cena's entrance music, Kurt Angle, Trish Stratus and Carlito. Oh and because I've never subscribed to a pay per view show before. But isn't that kind of a waste of 20 or 30 dollars? Well yes. But still, I don't have anything better to do on a Monday Night, so Wrestlemania here I come.

April Fool's Day

"Please pray for the soul of Wilson Tang. He got hit by a bus on the way to school today. Necrological services will be held at the Arlington funeral homes. Be there"

These were the exact words that I texted to friends, both close and not so close, exactly ten minutes before April 1.

I screwed it up. I'm such a sorry loser right now.

I texted a friend that had her bestfriend die the same way.

Of course, she wasn't amused.

Of course, I know she's quite angry at me now.

I just can't do anything right, both morally and immorally.

Check this out

Here's a really cool poker hand I played recently, I'm a little proud of how I played this hand so here it is:

$1-$2 7 handed no limit game. I started the hand with $220 and the other guy had $100 or so.

Preflop: The guy raised to $10 in middle position and I called on the button with 5s 5d. There is now $23 in the pot ($3 because of the folded blinds).

Flop: 7d, 7h, 4d. Guy bets $20. I hesitate and then call. There is now $63 in the pot.

Turn: Th. The board is now 7d, 7h, 4d, Th (two flush draws). Guy checks. I check behind him. There is still $63 in the pot.

River: 2c. The board is now 7d, 7h, 4d, Th, 2c. Guy pushes all-in with his last $70. I beat to him to the pot and I call with only 55. He shows Ac Kc. I take down a $203 pot ($103 profit) as my two pair sevens and fives (7d, 7h, 5s, 5d, Th) beats his pair of sevens with an ace kicker (7d, 7h, Ac, Kc, Th).

Analysis: Historically, the guy doesn't raise in middle position with nothing so it had to be a pocket pair or AK, AQ or at least AJ. When he overbet the flop (betting $20 to a $23 pot), he revealed that he didn't have a pocket pair, making it obvious he had a big ace. At the turn, he checked. I could have bet here but I decided to check because I wanted him to think I was chasing a flush and I wanted to get paid off at the river. When the 2 of clubs came on the river, there was no possible flush. He overbet the river to scare me away, but by then, I knew he had nothing and I called without hesitation.

Why was I so sure it was a bluff? Like I pointed out earlier, after playing with him before, I noticed that he doesnt raise in middle position with nothing. So with the board of 7 7 4 T 2, the only hand that he could have had to catch a monster with was TT for a full house. He wouldnt have raised with 44, 22, AT, A7 on middle position. And because of the overbet, I knew he didn't have a pocket pair (usually players with pocket pairs bet to chase away chasers but they dont want to overbet in case I had the 7 for trips). The reason I checked the turn is to tell him I don't have the 7 and that I had a flush draw so that he'd bet the river. I got lucky and the river was a meaningless black 2 and I got him to overbet again with an all-in.

The best thing about how I played this hand is that there is no other way I could have played it (i.e. raising on the flop or betting on the turn after it was checked to me) that could have made him bet his entire stack on a situation where I absolutely know he was bluffing. If I raised the flop after he bet the pot on the flop, he would have most probably folded earning me only $23 instead of his whole stack, or he could have re-raised me all-in, which would have made me fold fearing he has an overpair. If I bet the turn after he checked it to me, he would have most likely folded as well, he wouldn't have raised me on the turn with just ace high and no draw. The reason he pushed all-in with his last $70 overbetting to a $63 pot was because he put me on a busted flush draw and he overbet so that in case I had a small pair to the board like Ah 4h to give me a pair of fours and a flush draw on the turn, it would have been hard for me to call.

The biggest mistake he made in the hand was overbetting the flop. The gutsiest play I made was calling the huge bet on the flop with nothing but 55. But the best play hands down was the check on the turn misleading him on what my hand was. That set him up for an all-in move on the river which I anticipated.

Did you guys get the whole hand and analysis?

doing better

I've been meaning to write to our blog since it started but it's been consistently delayed and moved later due to circumstances. and now i find myself writing my first official blog entry while in my office where i'm supposedly being paid to be productive hehehe.

yes i am in the office, our internet connection at home was removed because we were supposed to downgrade the connection but my mother who is either brilliantly scheming or incredibly ignorant, just opted to not apply anymore until i get back in m%#$%@#!%$ december! para daw pumasok ako sa office.

anyay hindi tungkol dun yung entry na ito.

I am one of the seven students who graduated from AdMU Economics-Honors 2006. something to be happy about, true, but looking back at my whole college life especailly when compared to my other blockmates it consistently nags me... I could have done better.

It was only when we were lined up in graduation practice that the dreaded feeling came upon me. To see five out of the seven EcoH graduates march up while being announced: Suma Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Cum laude and two honorable mentions. while I just get my name and a rolled up a4. It kicks in, the dreadfulness of being directly compared to other individuals who have outperformed me. I am the other statistic, the mediocre EcoH. It's not so much as not getting a medal as it was not achieving what is expeted of me. It honestly sucks.

What embitters me is the fact that I only needed .06 to finish with honorable mention. if i needed a whole 2.5 then screw it id be glad i even passed! but .06, it meant that if the c+ in theo was a b+; or the c in matrix calculations was a b; or if I had more time to study; if i had less responsibilities; if i wasn't out that much; if I weren't the Glee Club president; if i wasn't as active and a micromanaging fanatic as glee club president; if i spent more time studying and not going out, or playing ps2 or rehearsing or playing poker . too many ifs to consider.

yeah too many ifs to consider when i shouldn't be considering them at all. it would've been far easier to blame the Glee Club or jim (hahaha joke lang) but it would have been wrong. It was my fault and i knew where i made the wrong choices. The grown up thing to do is to learn from the whole thing and move on. but it just doesn't go away. Regret. Regret sucks.

I'm not blaming anybody except myself for my leaving school without better grades. I just had to relese the regret portion out. I could have done better i admit it. Maybe i just needed to say that.

Circa 2002.

[Ack. Pardon the sentence construction. Sleep deprivation. This one's a reprise on the one about "the best is yet to come", and on jim's countless inspirational posts. and to the person who said that we're all fucking retarded. Well sometimes we're not. But most of the time, we are. lol.]

I was reading Wil's resume last night when I saw that he mentioned about that cyberfair thingy again. Again I wondered: "hey, whatever happened to it nga ba?"...

You see, the server stopped hosting the files. And we thought that it was gone forever.

Not.

AGAIN, with nothing else better to do, I remembered that I had once sent a copy to a friend of mine. So I decided to rummage my old edsamail files.

Yes edsamail. the false promise that everything was supposed to be free. The free (well it was free then) email account that we oh so abused with forwarded messages. I always thought that saving the dump *.mbx files would be of use in the future (yes I know, what a dork).

After installing edsamail 1.3 and overwriting the mbx files, lo and behold - nostalgia minefield! All my fourth year highschool email messages still intact! From emails from Ms. Balubar and Mr. Magalit, to Pierre's email attachments on the air hockey and pool game that we used to play in the computer room when Ms. Balubar wasn't looking, to my personal email exchanges with some of my close friends, the same friend whom I've sent the files to. Who? Let's just say I found my old macaroon recepie while browsing my sent messages. lol.

Grabe. 2002. Can't help but smile and remember. lol. Ang totoy at nene pa. heheheh.

The site now has a new home: http://www.geocities.com/lykwyss/edsa/index.htm (Pierre declined to host it because he felt too lazy to upload the files).

-----

But why all the hassle? Why reminisce a time that's long gone?

Because it's one of the things that will make us remember what it was like when we were in third and fourth year high. The time when we thought that we could conquer the world. The time when we thought that we could do anything. The time when we thought that we were the best senior batch in our school.

Puppy loves, crushes, chapel presentations, intramurals, and the occasional scandals. (" P*#$&!%@ ANONG MALI SA JOB PLAN KO???!!") Good times. =)

Well most of us are graduates now. And most forgot. All I'm asking is to look back and remember. Remember and make meaning out of it all.

After all, life's all about meaning making.

Here's to nostalgia. =)

One of my literary idols.

I was one of the luckier students in college to have Dr. Isagani R. Cruz as my professor in my Filipino literature class. It was an amazing three months. I consider him as one of my literary idols.

Why am I saying all of these to you guys? Well, because out of the blue, I tried googling his name and I found his blog. Yes, his blog. lol (I was actually trying to look up Isagani "A". Cruz, not "R". The journalist. But I stumbled upon this jewel in the internet sea instead).

Another sleepless night spent in reading but well worth it.

http://criticplaywright.blogspot.com/ enjoy. =)

Now if I could only find Marjorie Evasco's, and Bienvenido Lumbera's blog if they have one of those. heheh.

EUGENE - The perfect face

It's almost impossible to surpass a Wilson post (and as what he said to me, that we souldn't really see this as a competion lol. I agree). Consider this instead as a humble homage filler post to elevate the "Robin Hood of pr0n" to a higher pedestal.

-----

I've seen this once on the Discovery channel and wondered how I could get one of those face templates.

Anyway, one scientist once tried to calculate the perfect angles in the human face using the golden ratio of the Fibonacci number, that's 1.618 - the approximate proportion of shapes that provides its aesthetic appeal.

Shells, leaves, flowers are some of the things found in nature that exhibit this proportion (I couldn't find pictures to show to you guys. Sorry). So Dr. Marquardt (I'm logically guessing he's the dude behind it) made a wireframe face template of the "perfect face" based from his comparison computation of endless faces.

What you do is that you place this template over a mugshot portrait, and the closer the face resembles the template, the more attractive you are. More "perfect" if you will. From the same episode that I watched, Tom Cruise and umm, whats her name?... Cindy Crawford, both of them almost fit the template. Lol.

This golden ratio has also been a subject of pop controversy, most notably in the recent Dan Brown novel craze. The story goes that since 1.618, the fundamental ratio was the perfect ratio, well why not try it on Jesus?

So hey, here's a picture of the face mask that I've found at highfiber.org. Have fun.

-----

With nothing else better to do tonight, I decided that once and for all, I should take on the heaviest of burdens - to prove or disprove the fundamental universal theory - that EUGENE is the most perfect man alive in the world today. And now ladies and gentlemen, BEHOLD!:

EUGENE - THE PERFECT FACE.

Notice the reaction of the masterpiece upon knowlege of his now legendary status.

God's boundless grace has once again blessed us. This time, with the gift of Eugene. The dream of all the women and the envy of all the men. The perfect face.

We are not worthy.

Graduation

I posted this in my blog today and I guess I'm doing the same here

------------------------------------------

Ateneans are graduating this weekend.

Wow, I can't believe time passed this fast.

I remember the Orsem and how everyone was excited to be an Atenean.
I remember the long-ass lines just to enrol.
I remember the food.
I remember the morning classes and the only way to stay awake was either a plastic cup of hot milo or waiting for the hot chick who wears slutty outfits to walk past.
I remember the orgs.
I remember the late nights rehearsing for Tanghalang Ateneo.
I remember teaching underpriviledged high schoolers and Alternative classes.
I remember the inspiring teachers.
I remember the breaks where everyone caught up with each other and in my case, got drunk before the next class.
I remember being excited about the possibility of a free cut.
I remember the people.

Yes, I admit. A huge part of me wishes that I could be there marching with my blockmates, my high school batchmates, my org mates and everyone else. I remember the first day in Ateneo and I really thought that I'd be there for the full ride. I guess the traveller in me just couldn't be held down. I guess I needed to be more free. And now, I don't think I'm more free than before. But it was something that I needed to do, and I did it. At the very least, I got to experience what it was like to be an Atenean before I had to travel to the corners of the world.

It's a good thing that I'm doing good here otherwise I'd be incredibly sad and homesick. It took a year to get me settled in Wellington but I think I am finally. I have a good roommate, I'm incredibly enjoying my studies this semester and also, it's good to have a pseudo-kind of-potential but already there-dont have a description yet- girl. I've said it already before, but it's so good to finally move on and even better to have no drama whatsoever.

Anyway, congratulations Ateneans. I'm so proud of you guys. If I could walk down with you, I would. But I guess phonecalls and loving words are all I can offer right now. I'm glad I've been part of your ride and that you all were part of my shorter ride. I wish you guys nothing but the best for the future and what it beckons.

To shobs, tahnee, cathy, eug, wil, jeco, choi, nikki, cha, cheska, raerae, lingling, garrido, paul, jp, owen, bianca, kris, camille, marge, vonn, mardel, isabel, patty, lyra, kl, sasa, vanny, eli, johann, brian and everyone else I unintentionally missed... God speed and God bless.

Even God enjoys a good laugh

There were 3 good arguments that Jesus was Black:
1. He called everyone "brother".
2. He liked Gospel.
3. He couldn't get a fair trial.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Jewish:
1. He went into His Father’s business.
2. He lived at home until he was 33.
3. He was sure his Mother was a virgin and his mother was sure he was God.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Italian:
1. He talked with his hands.
2. He had wine with every meal.
3. He used olive oil.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was a Californian:
1. He never cut his hair.
2. He walked around barefoot all the time.
3. He started a new religion.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Irish:
1. He never got married.
2. He was always telling stories.
3. He loved green pastures.

But the most compelling evidence of all – 3 proofs that Jesus was a woman:

1. He fed a crowd at a moment's notice when there was no food.
2. He kept trying to get a message across to a bunch of men who just didn't get it.
3. And even when he was dead, He had to get up because there was more work to do.Amen!!!

k
Gullibility Actuated by Erectile Stimulus

(Author's note: I originally intended to write this in the American Psychological Association format using good English, but laziness got in the way)

With nothing productive to do on a warm, sunny day, I decided to become entrepreneurial to benefit on the free time at hand. However,a general lack of capital and bankable business ideas have left me no choice but to live on my wits and wits alone. Thus was borne the idea to swindle people out of their hard-earned cellphone load credits.

The idea really was simple. All I have to do was imitate show-for-load babes on the internet through select channels on mirc. Finding a suitable channel was easy with the use of the find channel command. I was able to find the right channels which included among others #malibog, #kantutan and #seb. Then, I advertised myself on these channels as a horny 23 female living in ortigas alone and playing with two glow-in-the-dark dildos. Immediately scores of chatters messaged me privately. The number was so great that I had to close almost half of them since my Pentium 2 PC with 256 mb memory was slowing down (Its that many). I had to settle it by closing the windows of more than half of these horny sons of bitches. To cut the story short, I was able to swindle P350 cellphone load.

Funny how easy it is to cash in on the gullibility and horniness of Filipinos.

Some of the highlights included having someone named Sevilla send me P50 load and another one who has been fooled four times previously before passed me P100 load.

A short transcript of the sample chat is as follows, with me being xxxx:

21:56] waputero: hello [21:56] waputero: Buzz!! [21:56] waputero: U2 here [21:58] waputero: Buzz!! [21:58] waputero: di naman ako pansin [21:58] waputero: ( [21:58] XXXX: hi [21:58] xxxx: 50 pesos show for load until midnight [21:58] waputero: ayun.........nag reply din [21:58] waputero: ngek [21:58] waputero: [21:59] waputero: la man lang preview? [22:03] waputero: Buzz!! [22:03] xxxx: no preview, unfair to paying clients [22:04] waputero: kahit 30 secs lang [22:04] waputero: or 15 [22:05] xxxx: 25 pesos [22:05] xxxx: for that amount of itme [22:05] waputero: eh di fifty na lang....until midnight pa [22:05] waputero: globe ka? [22:06] xxxx: oo [22:06] xxxx: 0915(my no.) [22:06] xxxx: se 22:06] xxxx: send na [22:06] waputero: nde ka ba manloloko? [22:07] xxxx: trust me [22:07] xxxx: in my line of work, its bad to fool people [22:07] xxxx: i need trust to have people frequently watch me [22:08] waputero: all the way ba? nasend na waputero: naloko ata ako [22:17] waputero: ano na po? [22:17] waputero: Buzz

I calculated that if I earn P150 from swindling these horny assholes each day for a month, i'd get P4,500 load. That's as good as having a subscription.

That's it, and I apologize for the messy, incoherent thoughts.

Where your taxes go

My apologies to the people whose relatives work in the Philippine National Police.

I am convinced that our most recent batch of the natiional police force are umm.. shall we say "palpakin" (blunderers). Let me enumerate three incidents that happened in the last 3 months or so:

1. The Ortigas cover-up incident.
Just last year, a carnapping scare took the Ortigas and Pasig area and scared the piss out of everyone, including myself. To prove that the PNP are not an impotent force, it allegedly staged a cover-up wherein they caught and shot the carnappers along Ortigas avenue.

News reports revealed disputing evidences (now I'm not stressing them as proofs, only as direct evidences) over the incident. First, that the alleged carnappers were hostile, armed, and retaliated but there were no exit holes from the carjacker's vehicle. Second, that a certain police officer was allegedly hit by a bullet fired from the carjacker's weapons but later evidence showed that that certain officer actually shot himself from his own ricochet bullet (more on this later). Third, that the carjackers were armed, but forensic evidences showed that A.) the back passenger was actually ducking from the car and trying to escape suggesting he was unarmed and that the weapon was planted, and B.) the side passenger fired and dropped his pistol from his right hand. Family testimonials refuted this proof by revealing that the alleged carnapper was acually left-handed and at that time, his right arm had a fracture and could not possibly use the pistol (later confirmed by the forensic autopsy).

Finally, and possibly the stupidest thing that the law enforcement force could have done was to do the cover-up in front of a TV station. of course, it would be inevitable that the station would cover the incident. analysis of its video revealed that the alleged carjackers were not hostile, did not retaliate at all and the police made sure they were dead when the first fired at them (one police officer did not hesitate to check the scene and immediately popped a few bullets to the half-dead driver after the initial ceasefire. the video also confirmed that the police officer that was mentioned a while ago did indeed shot himself from his own ricochet bullet).

2. Pasig Meth Den Demolition
Second case in point. with no further elaboration, an identified meth den in Pasig was immediately demolished by the police with the mayor's supervision even without court order. The mayor did not give any justification of his orders (he only said that we need to destroy these kinds of places immediately so the pushers won't come back or something in that nature. very logical for a place that's quarantined and guarded). later news revealed that some drug transactions were allegedly connected to the people in city hall.

3. Dinky Soliman Capture
And now, the Coup de gras. Just last week, the former secretary of social welfare and development (while making their usual friday night rounds around the city, walking around wearing black shirts that says "oust Gloria" or something with that nature) was arrested and detained by the police because they allegedly broke the presidential decree on staging unauthorized rallies. The police later changed their charge saying that it's because the former secretary was wearing a black shirt, and with messages that could insight into sedition. this reason was changed yet again to what is now reported just today in inq7.net:

"THE POLICE are now revising their charge against former secretary of social welfare Dinky Soliman to that of buying and falsely advertising a "DKNY" imitation shirt, which she acquired for P10 from 168 Mall.

As it turns out, the real DKNY does not come in extra-short, extra-wide sizes."

...I rest my case.

This one's for Mary

Back in my sophomore college year, I once had a basic computer literacy subject. Yup, it's same as the ones in highschool where they teach you how to use the mouse, how to click the start button, find microsoft Word and launch the program. I know what you're thinking and yes, its an easy 4.0 (that's an "A" in blue and white standards).

Three months of breeze this subject was, and getting a 4.0 was an effort that was as easy as waking up in the middle of the night just to take a piss. But no, this is GLENN that we're talking about. Glen-the anti-authority; Glen- the non-conformist; Glen- the jackass.

The very same Glen who made a freshman highschool transfer student's life a living hell by pretending to be attracted to her and made pranks by sending anonymous roses implying that it was from some hunky classmate nicknamed "tuxedo mask" (yes Eug, IT WAS ME!! Hahaha! And I'm sorry for it heheh). The very same Glen who in the same year, stopped a fieldtrip bus just to buy smutty tabloids on the street corner (I would like to stress out that this was out of a wager and not my personal preference) just to piss our class adviser off. The very same Glen who (much to the content and enjoyment of his colleagues) made an ass of of their junior highschool class adviser (but it kinda backfired lol.)

The list goes on. heh. But oi, i'm really good guy at heart (this is for the people who'd prejudge me) I just can't help the mischievous tendencies. But I've changed my ways heh.

Anyway, In one crucial project, my professor, who's a behavioral science department professor and a die-hard green and white alumnus (isn't it weird that a computer professor would come from the behavioral science department?) tasked us to make a songsheet of whatever song we would like to choose, as an exercise of microsoft word typing and layouting proficiency. This was the type of die hard alumni peeps that would give you grade incentives if you watched your school team playing the rival school team.

To make the story short, here's what i passed:

The schmuck failed me on this project and I ended up missing my 4.0 final grade.

The best is yet to come

Imagine 1986. Imagine that you're part of the thousands of people that congregated to form the EDSA revolution.

Imagine youself joining hands with the other people. Imagine yourself being one with the crowd, with one sentiment and with one Hope.

Now imagine these lines going through your head:

Tell me
I'm not alone
Tell me
We are not alone in this world
Fighting against the wind

Do you remember the time
When simple things made you happy?

Do you remember the time
When little things made you laugh?

You know
Life can be simple

You know
Life is simple

Because
The best thing in life is yet to come
Because....
The best is yet to come.

Is it just me
Or is it just us
Feeling lost in this world?
Why do we have to hurt each other?
Why do we have to shed tears?

Life can be beautiful if you try;
Life can be joyful if we try.

Back in 2002, eight JCA seniors joined an international website competition. The eight won gold in both the Philippine and in the international divisions (which technically meant that two merit awards are to be given to each of the seniors).

What many do not know (and fewer would care) about was that a particular Gaelic song was used to set the atmosphere of the said entry. It was chosen not because of its solemn tune but really because of its lyrics. Yup, its the one entitled "The Best is Yet to Come". A fitting title, no?

Read the lyrics. Find the song. Check out the site (if its still online). I hope this one would inspire individuals to rise above the adversities of life, to achieve beyond everyone else's expectations, and to actualize your potentials. Because hey, after all, the best is yet to come.

Here's to nostalgia, baby.

An cuimhin leat an grá
Crá croí an ghrá
Níl anois ach ceol na h-oíche
Táim sioraí i ngrá
Leannáin le smál
Leannáin le smál
Lig leis agus beidh leat
Lig leis agus beidh grá

Cuimhne leat an t-am
Nuair a bhí tú sásta
An cuimhne leat an t-am
Nuair a bhí tú ag gáire

Tá an saol iontach
Má chreideann tú ann
Tug aghaidi ar an saol is sonas sioraí inár measc

Céard a tharla do na laethanta sin
Céard a tharla do na h-oícheanta sin
An cuimhin leat an t-am
Nuair a bhí tú faol bhrón

An cuimhin leat an t-am
Go sioraí sileadh na ndeor an ormsa nó orainne a bhí an locht

Ag mothú caiite s'ar fán
Cén fáth an t-achrann is sileadh na ndeor
Tá áilleacht sa saol
Má chuardaíonn tú e
Tá gliondar sa saol

Maskuman

Just to lighten things up a bit, here's a little something that Filipino children of the 80's would remember and appreciate.

Here's to nostalgia, baby.

Hikari Sentai MaskMan (The Tagalog version. heh.)

Humanda na kayo
Kampon ng kadiliman
Oras na ng pagtutuos
Kasamaan nyo dapat matapos
Narito na sila
Bayaning tagapagtanggol
Sama sama'y lilipol
Maskuman kayo lang ang pag-asa
Iligtas kami sa marahas n kadiliman
Kami'y inyong ipaglaban

Sige sige laban Maskuman
Ipagtanggol ang kapayapaan
Sugod sugod laban Maskuman
pagsanggalan ninyo ang katarungan
Buong mundo'y magpupuri
pagpupugay mabuhay

Sidewalk

This was given to my class by my professor. He's basically a very animated and very inspirational teacher who also looks like Sean Connery. Some of my classmates say John Malkovich. But I still say he's 007, especially when he's glaring at me which causes me to almost wet myself.

Anyway, enjoy because I really enjoyed reading this piece of inspirational literature.

Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
by Portia Nelson

Chapter One

I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost ... I am helpless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes forever to get out.

Chapter Two

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I'm in the same place.
But it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter Three

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is still there.
I still fall in ... it's a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter Four

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter Five

I walk down another street.

Phil's Animal Types

Taken from Play Poker like the Pros written by Nine time WSOP champion Phil Hellmuth

"There are five animal types: the mouse, lion, jackal, elephant and eagle. I have created these animals because they seem to be the most common types out there right now."

"The mouse is like your old aunt Edna, a conservative type who probably wouldn't even approve of your reading this book. The mouse - like you - plays only the top ten hands but hates to invest any money with a hand as weak as 7-7 or 8-8. The mouse hardly ever raises someone else's bet; but when he does raise, look out, because he has the goods!"

"The lion is a tough competitor who plays fairly tight poker but doesn't limit himself to the top ten hands. He bluffs with excellent timing and seems to know when the other players are trying to bluff him. Though he plays pretty tight, he's occasionally out on a limb with a bluff or a semibluff. You could do worse than play like the lion."

"The jackal is loose and wild, and some days it seems as though he's just giving his money away. Because he's involved in so many pots and raises so often, his play can take some pretty big swings. The jackal's logic seems at odds with the logic of all the other players. He just seems crazy! The jackal can hurt you and himself too with his crazy play, because he puts in so many bets."

"The elephant is fairly loose... He's what we refer to in poker as a "calling station": he never folds when he is supposed to fold, because he doesn't ever believe that you have the goods. Because he's impossible to bluff, no one with much experience ever tries to bluff him."

"Finally, we have the eagle. The eagle is a rare bird, and you might not ever play with him, because he's one of the top poker players in the world."

Eighteen Rues

I have seen the day
that generosity was misunderstood;
that selflessness was romanticized.
I did.

I have also seen the day
when creation became destruction;
when purity became tainted;
when power became impotent;
when piety became incest;
when liberty became bigotry;
when selflessness became selfishness;
when desire became detest;
when bliss became brawling.
you did.

I have finally seen the day
that symbols were obvious-
that opposites attract.
we did.

-------

[[I actually don't know whether this one is nonsensical or just crappy. i think its both.

this one's supposed to be about irony. It's actually from a personal experience of mine.

eighteen rues. eighteen rules. eighteen lines.
eight teen rues. eight symbolic gifts to eight of my friends on my eighteenth birthday.
eight gifts that were misunderstood.
eight gifts that meant to resonate. to resonate each of the good qualities that i've seen in these eight friends.
eight qualities that ive also grown when i became friends with them.

yet it turned out that the eight good qualities that i saw in them became the same opposite qualities that they returned to me that finally lead to our own separate ways.

we then realized for ourselves that myself and them were polar opposites. yet we coexisted.

a sad story for a friendship that never really was.]]

Heart of Worship

Sometimes, we need to remember so we can never forget.

--------------------------------------

When the music fades
all is stripped away
and i simply come
longing just to bring
something that's of worth
that will bless your heart

i bring you more than a song
for a song in itself
is not what you have required
you search much deeper within
through the way things appear
you're looking into my heart

chorus
I'm coming back to the heart of worship
and it's all about you
It's all about you, Jesus
I'm sorry Lord for the thing i've made it
when it's all about you
it's all about you, Jesus

King of endless worth
no one could express
how much you deserve
though i'm weak and poor
all i have is yours
every single breath

chorus

Untitled

You think you have an interesting life. And for the most part, you do. You wake up, you go to your job, you go out in the weekends. You do everything you're supposed to do the way it's supposed to be done. But once in a while, there's a chance to do more, and you take it.

I read. I write. I create. I chat. I think. But most of all, I appreciate. Yes, they all matter to me because i make meaningful experiences out of them. Yet these are the small things in life that many neglect.

Giving up the whole afternoon just to read a Buru Quartet; sharing your personal thoughts and opinions to someone you hardly know; baking macaroons as an expression of gratitude; helping someone to design a guidebook cover and not ask for anything in return just because you are passionate about it.

In this material world that we are living, there are far more things in life that money can't buy. People should start appreciating these small things and make meaning out of it.

My life can't just be interesting, it has to be meaningful.

Step up

Everywhere I look, I am reminded
Forced to drop illusions and face reality
Responsibilities and obligations
Welcome to the real world

Apparently, we're no longer young
That we can no longer depend on anyone
That we must look upon ourselves
to survive; to do what we must

I wish I knew what the plan was
To be able to live and survive
But its time we step up
step up and make our mark

I hope Im not alone
I hope you're all with me
to take on the horizon
and live like men would live

blue and yellow, orange and black, green and white.

March 08, 2006 saw itself as the day where the blue and yellows clashed with the orange and blacks. it was the green and white's student council miting de avance.

As a move by the minority party (the ones in the blue and yellow) to attack and devalue the character of the opposing orange and black presidential candidate (from the majority party), a line of homosexuals affiliated to the blue and yellows stood beside the audience as presidentiable was making his platform speech. One of them even did a floor gymnast routine after the speech was done.

This blogger leaves it to you to discern whether this action was a witty attempt or a futile one to discredit the inevitable victory of their oppenents. For years, the blue and yellows has failed to gain the majority candidacy on the general elections because of their weak specific plans of action, and their primary stigma of being an insubstantial rightist party who focuses more on activities and social events rather than than building itself as a responsible, credible political party that the orange county exudes.

Interestingly, their existence is an anti-thesis of each other, as both of them complementarily represent the university student psyche. The first half is perceived as the free-spirited lasallian, while the latter, is the serious-minded one. However, when it comes to social responsibility/irresponsibility, class consciousness/unconsciousness and sympathy/apathy, lets just say that both of them have their own shares.

Azure/Or, Gules/Sable, however you would like to proudly banner your heraldry, you're all still Argent and Vert. The point isn't really about who's who and who does what, it's about exercising mutual respect. Be as it may that these exhibitions are an indication of a healty and colorul political existence, but there are also plain lines that one simply do not cross, and personal character is the first among these lines. It's a blatant fallacy and you know it. The noble virtue of mutual respect is exercised the whole year round, and not only on public situations.

This blogger assures you that a gesture done on a particular magnitude of an event is possitively correlated to the magnitude of its repercussions as the scandalous nature of this blogger knows better. lol.

Finally, to the remaining green and white students here in this group blog (or whoever else that would be vaguely interested in wasting their time reading this), this blogger strongly urges you to exercise your right to vote and more importantly, to vote wisely.

Hate messages against this blogger's stand are welcomed. But before you do, think of the reason why team B consistenly sweeps the freshmen elections while team A consistently sweeps the general elections. This blogger rests his case.

it's just wrong

i think i can make this gig a regular thing lol.

i was checking my mail the other day when i saw this online ad from englicom, the filipino-chinese organization in de la salle (like celadon in admu. its president stresses that its more proper to describe it as the filipino AND chinese organization and i say its adding crap icing to the dung cake). check it out:

its a photo contest project of the said org. ive been scrutinizing the branding, nature of activities, of this particular organization because even though im not a member (i dont want to join), i feel that i (actually we) are all part of it in the sense that we represent the filipino chinese community. lets take a minute of your time to digest this particular project of theirs.

its actually a project that aims to raise social awareness through a photography contest. well the idea sounded good but the way that they packaged it is simply just wrong.

peppering the advertisement with emotively charged words to describe a marginalized social sector is simply inappropriate, if not arrogant. take a particular look at the second sentence. apalling isnt it? whats even worse (or funnier) is that the mechanics of the contest are actually leading. heheh.

now, wouldnt it be nicer and would make more sense if they instead just made a sustainable long-term socio-civic activity than make this one? a quick fix for social responsibility of the filipino chinese community?

tsk tsk. it's just wrong.

check it out. well yung poster pa lang naman ang nakita ko but the idea behind it is nice. a friend of mine in lasalle and i thought this wasnt possible for at least a few years pa. never thought that with enough vision, tenacity, and the finances to back it up, the idea would be tangible here in the phils heheh. siguro years in making din to. kudos! =). http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/29132992/

what was pure 20 years back

the 24th was a very frustrating day for me. frustrating personally, and frustrating for my sentiments towards the filipino psyche.

i deliberately didnt sleep on the night of the 23rd so that i can change my body clock and be able to go to school at around lunch time but all my efforts were in vain. to my surprise, i found out that classes and work was suspended for the day due to the arising "threat" of a coup attempt aimed at the administration. be as it may, the declaration had its warrants. but what caught my ire on the situation was the accompanying civil rallies especially the demonstrations held on the EDSA shrine. it seemed wrong. all wrong. i sadly think that the ideologies that people have been so zealously rallying about in EDSA during the 24th and the 25th, take note, the 20th anniversary of the 1st EDSA revolution are seriously altered from what the shrine meant years back.

admittedly, these personal sentiments are not completely to be taken with complete merit as i wasnt born at that time. who am i to tell them what is right and what is wrong? what they were bickering about was just and not merely a bastardization of what was considered as the filipino pride twenty scores back? but i understand one thing, EDSA is a symbol.

from what i know, the 1st revolution was a revolution against dictatorship. the 2nd revolution was against a corrupt governance. the commonality of these callings ("EDSA 3" isnt considered as such because it was violent and NOT because it was merely instigated by the social sectors who voted for then the incumbent.) is that EDSA is a shining symbol. it symbolizes unity amongst diversity. it symbolizes that common ideal can be achieved through unwaivering unity and a peaceful demonstration of a unified sentiment. that i understood. and about the place itself? merely coincidental. it was conviniently situated in between camp aguinaldo and camp crame.

the congregations during the weekend however wasnt anything near the aforementioned. it simply took the opportunity of the moment. and if only the people took the time to realize and appreciate what the people courageously and selflessly did 20 years ago, i assure you they would be completely ashamed of what they did. yes, they overromanticized and bastardized what was pure then. saddening. it truly is.

if the people want a change from the status quo, doing another EDSA simply isnt the way to do so. if what they are saying is true, that the administration and the incumbent are plunderers (ah, that remains to be proven heheh), if true, the administrations efforts and actions for national equilibrium are recognized. justifiable but immoral.

so, what the people are doing is wrong, but they are doing it for the right reasons; what the admin is doing is right, but they are doing it for the wrong reasons.

in the end, this blogger has complete confidence that the incumbent will finish its remaining presidential years. the admin is just shrewd enough to maintain its hold if dystopia arises.

The Riding

by Thackerson

Long and lost was I
riding towards the sea
out the ridge o'er the trees
The rivulet passes by

And ho, my brothers ride
merry along the way
to which no man hath gone fore
look back no more
look back no more

American McGee's Alice

[if you havent seen of played this game yet, i suggest that you do. it's eye candy. im imagining this adaptation to be similar to those small scale b-rated movies with shoestring budgets and trashy scripts like doom and resident evil. god i hope the movie wont be that bad.]

Sarah Michelle Gellar gets ready to star in "Alice in Wonderland" movie
By Borys Kit and John Gaudiosi
Saturday 25 June 2005.

LOS ANGELES - Sarah Michelle Gellar is attached to star in a feature version of the Electronic Arts video game "American McGee’s Alice," which is itself based on Lewis Carroll’s "Alice in Wonderland" novels.

In the game, Alice has grown up to become a disturbed young woman. After her parents are killed in a fire, Alice returns to Wonderland, a dark and threatening place of looking glasses, mysterious potions, nonsensical tea parties and talking animals, confronting her fears and the wicked Queen of Hearts.

The film, "Alice," is set up at Universal Pictures, where it will be directed by Marcus Nispel, who shot the recent update of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." Gellar’s recent credits include "The Grudge" and the "Scooby Doo" films.

"American McGee’s Alice" became a critically acclaimed hit on the PC when it shipped in December 2000. The game received an 83% aggregate review score on Gamerankings.com, which helped Electronic Arts sell more than 488,000 units of the game and generate more than $11.8 million in revenue, consulting firm NPD Group said. The game was created by American McGee, a lead designer of the "Quake" and "Doom" series.

That same month, Dimension Films optioned the movie rights to "Alice" from Electronic Arts; horror veteran Wes Craven was attached to produce and direct.

deconstructing subliminal messages in rainbow candies [part 1]

advertising is basically branding. branding is about strategic marketing. and strategic marketing bases itself on psychology, whether it focuses on personality psychology, or social psychology, it depends on the product and on the image that it wants to convey.

people do not wonder about m&m's, a popular chocolate staple in our inventory of high calorie diet's message because it is plain and simple. with its colorful pieces it is obviously a marketing strategy that aims to induce hunger and variety on its target market, the children, with its end goal of increased consumption (for a related reasearch, take a look at my paper about the effect of the variety on food preference). add the familiar ernie and bert colored peanut and plain flavored m&m for brand retainability purposes, and finally, its catchphrase "melts in your mouth, not in your hand" catchphrase, and you got one effective product branding.

another similar existing product is NIPS. innocently packaged as an alternative to the popular m&m's, one could not help but think about its impact (whether supraliminal or subliminal) on children's cognition, especially that this product has no mascot for visual retainability other than its colorful candies (an obvious rip-off to the mainstream m&m's), and it only has literary advertisments seen in aged commercials to back it up.

this research aims to deconstruct the branding of the said product, to analyze its social implications, specifically to the children, and finally, fill the void of knowledge in the field of developmental psychology, specifically on the effects of the branding of food to the childen's cognitive processes later in life.

due to time, resource, and motivational constraints, this research is limited only to basic literary analysis. a review of related literature, inline citations, are not possible. however, it is fortunate that this author was able to obtain a piece of literary advertisment of the said product, and careful dissection of its meaning is possible.

using jaques derrida's deconstructivism as an analytical tool for our one and only piece of hard data thus enables us to examine the manifest, latent, social (and political), and finally devonstructive levels of meaning of the said "jingle".

Wanna see what happens in a bag of nips
What goes on before it touch my lips
They make a rainbow, chocolate nips
A choco rainbow, chocolate nips
And then they color all the flowers
And became a tree....

presented before you is the advertisement jingle of NIPS. its manifest content speaks for itself.

when it comes to its latent content however, different interpretations arise. examining its first line, one cannot help but think on the meaning of bag of nips. what is nips really? what other interpretations can we have for it being in a bag?

recall what when we were in our prepubescent years, this was the time when our pituitary glands begin to send signals to our gonads to produce hormones to initiate the growth of our primary and secondary sexual characteristics. among those are the growth of beards, the advent of menarche, and particularly, the growth of the breasts. before the full growth of the female breasts, (for a related research on breasts, see my paper about the effect of breast size on male and female teenager interaction) it beggins with a budding or puffing of the female nipple. this "puff" is fondly teased girl cohorts (take note, GIRL cohorts only. why are male not included you say, pre-teen boys are simply not interested in budding nipples, barely poking out through girl's trainer sandos. again, read my research about the breast size and social interactions) as "grapes". one can only assume that it is because of its resemblance. the author has no way of determining the factuality of the said monicker. another popular monicker that girl cohorts dub for this budding protuberance is "nips", a shortened name for nipple, because it connotes the meaning "little nipple".

a bag on the other hand is simply a receptacle. but putting it in its literary context, it is possible that the bag is used as a receptacle for the nips, in its latent meaning, an object that holds the young woman's budding nipple. what else could it be other than a trainer bra or a sando bra? this solves the latent meaning of the first line of this jingle unfit to be heard and comprehended by the children's innocent psyche.

could it be possible that this rainbow chocolate alternative brands itself as a young woman's budding nipple? it could just might possibly be. latent content analysis of the succeeding lines allows us to put more rationalization.

[end of part 1]

the one about vanilla sky

My dreams are a cruel joke.
They taunt me.
Even in my dreams I'm an idiot... who knows he's about to wake up to reality.

If I could only avoid sleep.
But I can't.
I try to tell myself what to dream.
I try to dream that I am flying.
Something free.

It never works...

the one about the show "friends"

there was a time that i loathed watching the show friends. in my delusional world, i had convinced myself that friends wasnt funny, had low-brow corny humor, and was not different from the other endless sitcoms that existed.

what's even weirder was that ive done the same for the show x-files..

but weirdest thing was that i convinced all of those to myself just to piss the hell out of mariane during my sixth grade elementary (still remember wil? heheh. oh yeah, sorry jim).

not only do i regret that now, realizing that i have deprived myself of enjoying the feel good show and the full appreciation of the concept of friends, but i just wanna say that i love you guys. this is what a friends marathon can do to you heheh.

this still however doesnt change the fact that i'd still wanna piss the heck out of mariane, just for the heck of it. i just can't help it. heheh =) (still remember wil? heheh. oh yeah sorry again jim).

the one about the casino

jeco, jim and i went to casino filipino last night to play some poker. it was my first time to go to a casino and to play a real big stakes money game. not the usual small buy-ins. this one's real big.

it was a 20/40 no limit table, no antes, with a 1000-5000 peso limit buy-in. jeco and i had a 3000 peso buy-in, while jim had 4000. man. just the thought of that, playing with that much of your own money would choke you. and admittedly, it scared the heck out of me at first.

we waited a little for the other people to sit-in and to play with us. not that i want to make them look sleazy or anything because theyre really not and they actually nice people, but the people playing there are real stereotype gamblers. old chinese geezers, old foreingers that look like dirty old men, mistresses, GI's, and drivers of rich dignitaries. we waited till the table was about 6-7 people sitting in, enough to make a short-handed game and we started.

jeco and jim advised me to play tightly when you go against these kind of people in these kind of situations. money was nothing to them. in some hands, they'd easily bet about 1-3k of their stack. yaiks.

so following their advice, i played ultra tight, playing mostly with premium hands, mixing up with a few marginal hands so that they would think that im a passive tight type of player.

i had my first real hand early on, cowboys to be exact and raised 300. everybody else folded except for one guy who called. in the turn, he pushed me with huge bet that'll take a huge chunk of my stack if i called and losed and i folded because i was worrying about him making a full house as there was a pair in the board. first bad move of the night.

there were also a number of bad moves that i made that made me lose all my stack and had to re-buy another 2000 to get back in the game. at one time jeco and i (stupidly enough) went heads up. i dunno if it was stupidity or a show of sexual tension or sumthin but we went heads up, instead of checking the board all of the way till the river. anywho my pocket snowmen got beaten by a sneakier full that made itself in the river. after that i was short stacked.

made my final stand late in the evening and i decided to go all in with a big hand. at small blinds i caught another pair of cowboys and decided to go all in. two other people called. at the flop, an ace came and the other guy made a huge bet that forced the third player to fold so it was heads up between us. turns out that my guess was right, no way would he call my all in if he had an ace. i was dreading that. got badly beaten by an AK. at least it bought me some time to reassess myself (i choked terribly) and get a snack at the carrels.

after my much need break i got back into the game and rebuyed with a 2000 stack to stay in the game. 2000 isnt much, you'll easilly get pushed around. a good stack to play with is about 4000-5000. played tight again until i pushed all in to double up. we left at around 1:30 in the morning after i played my last hand, hooks, that took another 400 or so from the guy to my right.

in the end i ended up with 4k+ (thats actually quite good if you consider me being a terrible poker player), while jim was down with about a thousand and jeco, up by more than three thousand, just enough to repay the money both of them lent to me, and learned a few lessons:

1. bring a good amount of money when you wanna play poker in the casino.
2. have a bankroll just for playing. dont use your own money.
3. never, and i mean NEVER think that it's real money that you're playing. it'll make you choke instantly and i guarantee that you'll lose.
4. play tight in these situations. i initially played tight, waiting for premium hands and tried position playing and realized it would goddamn matter to them. they're jackals and they wouldnt matter to them if you had rags or rockets to raise with. they would've called the same just to see the flop. outplaying them? its pretty much useless. it's better to fish for a card and limping in.
5. just check the cards till the end like what you do in online tables if you're going heads-up with a friend. hear that jeco? heheh.
6. its kinda fun and i want to try it again some time if i get to have a bankroll that can back me up. commissioned works anyone?

i'm thinking about practising some more (actually a lot more. haven't fully regained my poker esteem since my long absence from playing at online tables) and try tournament style next time. the playing there is entirely different and hopefully filipinos here wont act like smart alecs and blurt out poker stuff that they'd only heard about in the WPT. feeling. goddamnit that really fucking annoys me.

I Love This...

I sing of little dreams
Of lovers, islands, secrets and poetry
Stumming tales from the heart
you Know they resonate in you and me

Now I'll take the stage
But I'll always be
Among you where I belong
To rock your hearts out

I'm supernaturally hypnotized
I'm singing our song like I've never been so high

Paparapapa love ko to
Paparapapa love ko to

I hear the beat from above
It guides my heart and fills the groove of my soul
No matter where it takes me
On the same ground is where we will always be

Now I'll take the stage
But I'll always be
Among you where i belong
To rock your hearts out

I'm supernaturally hypnotized
I'm singing our song like i've never been so high

Paparapapa love ko to
Paparapapa love ko to

As I take you to my dreams
Soring high above among the stars
Will it keep my feet safe and warm on the ground?

Now I'll take the stage
But I'll always be
Among you where i belong
To rock your hearts out

I'm supernaturally hypnotized
I'm singing our song like i've never been so high

Paparapapa love ko to
Paparapapa love ko to

Casino experience

Jeco and I went to Casino Filipino awhile ago and it was a lot of fun.

The game was no limit hold'em at 20-40.
Sadly, we didn't bring enough money and we could only buy in for 1,500.
That meant we only had under 40 bets to play with.
And since pots would run to 2000 per hand, my plan was pretty much to find a hand and move in hoping to double up.
I folded some hands I wish I could have played because the raises were huge pre-flop so I had to much QJ and QT.
At the BB, I checked the blind with K2 of spades. There were 7 people to the flop.
Flop was 568 with two spades. I checked. Someone bet out 200 and I called along with 4 others.
Turn was the Q of spades giving me the king high spade flush. I checked. Someone bet out 500 and everyone called. I had two choices. Raise all-in or call the bet.
But because I didn't have enough to call a river bet anyway, I moved all in with my last 700 hoping to scare away two pairs in case the board paired.
Unfortunately, I got called by the nut flush. And that was it for me.

It was a fun experience because I've never played on a casino before. I was glad to see that the other players weren't good. One lady on my table, in fact, called a hand to the river with the board showing AK773. The lady had QJ. They weren't all like that, but still.

What made it hard for me playing on a casino was that the atmosphere is a little different. It's weird cause I'm used to higher limits so the money didn't really scare me, but it was just that the feel of it is different. I'm used to home games and I'm comfortable reading a book and I know at least one other person on the table. At the casino, Jeco was at anotber table so it was kind of strange.

Anyway, I'm coming back on Tuesday with the max buy-in. 40 bets is not enough to play with so I didn't get a chance to make some plays. It doesn't look like a hard game to crush so I'm looking to do just that. If y'all want to join us, let me know.

Oh and in case you're wondering how much would be good to buy-in at a 20-40, I'd say 2000 at the very least. That's 50 bets and will allow you to play with a little more breathing room. But if you can, 4000 would be a good amount, especially if you plan on playing a lot of hands.

Alright, I'm off to play at a tourney.

another controversy for me hehehehe

I posted this message on the yahoogroups of the presidents of SOA. Let's just say I received less than flattering remarks for this.

The Gambler

On a warm summer’s evenin’ on a train bound for nowhere,
I met up with the gambler; we were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a starin’ out the window at the darkness
’til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak.

He said, son, I’ve made a life out of readin’ people’s faces,
And knowin’ what their cards were by the way they held their eyes.
So if you don’t mind my sayin’, I can see you’re out of aces.
For a taste of your whiskey I’ll give you some advice.

So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression.
Said, if you’re gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right.

You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done.

Now ev’ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin’
Is knowin’ what to throw away and knowing what to keep.
’cause ev’ry hand’s a winner and ev’ry hand’s a loser,
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep.

So when he’d finished speakin’, he turned back towards the window,
Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep.
And somewhere in the darkness the gambler, he broke even.
But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep.

You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done.

You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count you r money when you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done.

What would you do?

1. You're at the BB with AJ. An early position player raises. A middle position player calls the raise and the cut-off seat re-raises.

2. You're at the button with AK. Three players limp, you raise, the blinds fold but the the three limpers call. Flop is at J87 rainbow. The first player bets and the next two players fold.

3. You raise at the button with Ad Ah (red aces). Two players call your raise. The flop is 789 all clubs. A player bets and another player calls.

Dare you to move

It's 1am and I'm listening to this switchfoot song. It's from A Walk to Remember and it's titled "Dare you to move". I've always liked this song. I understand and I appreciate the message of this song and I just thought I'd share it here.

Welcome to the planet
Welcome to existence
Everyone's here
Everyone's here
Everybody's watching you now
Everybody waits for you now
What happens next
What happens next

I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened before

Well, I think it's saying that life is shit. Sometimes, as optimistic as you want to be, there is just no other truth to it. Sometimes, life is just shit.

And I think that's alright. Because what matters is what you do about it. Yes, life is shit, you're going to fail, it's just bound to happen. If not for fate, it's bound to happen by statistic. No one is just going to breeze through life, it just doesn't work that way.

The point is, failing is inevitable. You're going to flunk an exam. You're going to get dumped. You're going to get fired. You're going to lose over and over and over again. Life is going to kick you so bad that you're going to want to stay down. It's going to take people from you. It's going to make you wish you've never been born. It's going to make you wish that you could just end your existence.

So fine, life is shit. Now what are you gonna do about it? That's the point of it all. What happens next? That, is the question. Just because life is fucked up, doesn't mean we all have to be fucked up.

So I dare you to move. I dare us all to get off our asses and do something about it. I dare us to do something great. I dare us to be a part of history. I dare us all to etch our names along with names that we look up to. I dare us to make a mark. I dare us to look within ourselves and look into the world with renewed vigor. I dare us to attack the world like today, our failings, never happened.

Everyone's graduating soon. For some reason, it's a different kind of atmosphere. You can taste the fear in the air. The uncertainty and the hesitation is ever-present. I remember when we were graduating from high school. We felt like we were going to take over the world. That's because deep down inside, we knew that we didn't have to yet. In those terms, our bravado was nothing more than a lie. But now, it's time to prove ourselves and I can feel everyone's reservations. We all know about the stories. We all know about the wasted potential. We all know of the people who were kings in high school or college. They were prodigies who looked like they were going to make millions and live happy and contented lives. You know these people. They are your friends. They are even your family. But like everyone, life dragged them down. It's a sick and sad world out there where dog eats dog.

So fine, life is shit. So I dare you to move. I dare me to move. I dare us to lift ourselves off the floor and be someone. If you want to be a leader, then be the best damn leader there ever was. If you want to be a businessman, then give it all you've got. If you want to find your true love, then never give up. If you want to live a happy life, then you've got to get up everytime you get dealt a bad hand.

It's time to be great, gentlemen.

So now, what happens next?

Away With Tears

Averse, not, Noble,
But, Oh, not, A, word,
Otherwise,
Pray, thee, hear,

My, mellow, sensitive, confessionals,
Angst, convoluted, frustrations,
On, Sabbath,

Then, Catharsis.

It is gone now – eveything is clear.
Averse not Noble.

kabaduyan ko pag nababagot lol (warning: sappy!)

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived; Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all the others, including Love.

One day it was announced to all of the feelings that the island was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean. So all the feelings prepared their boats to leave. Love was the only one that stayed. She wanted to preserve the island paradise until the last possible moment.

When the island was almost totally under, Love decided it was time to leave. She began looking for someone to ask for help. Just then Richness was passing by in a grand boat. Love asked:

"Richness, can I come with you on your boat?"

Richness answered: "I'm sorry, but there's a lot of silver and gold in my boat and there would be no room for you anywhere."

Then Love decided to ask Vanity for help, who was passing in a beautiful vessel. Love cried out: "Vanity, help me please."

"I can’t help you." Vanity said. "You are all wet and will damage my beautiful boat."

Next, Love saw Sadness passing by. Love said: "Sadness, please let me go with you".

Sadness answered "Love, I’m sorry, but I just need to be alone now."

Then, Love saw Happiness. Love cried out: "Happiness, please take me with you!" but Happiness was so overjoyed that he didn’t hear Love calling to him.

Love began to cry.

Then, she heard a voice say, "Come Love, I will take you with me". It was an elder.

Love felt so blessed and overjoyed that she forgot to ask the elder his name. When they arrived on land, the elder went on his way. Love realized how much she owed the elder. Love then found Knowledge and asked, "Who was it that helped me?"

"It was Time," Knowledge answered.

"but why did Time help me when no one else would?" Love asked.

Knowledge smiled and with deep wisdom and sincerity, answered "Because only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is."

Today, I again attempted to cup the passing Air between my hands.
The feeling was enigmatic, inexplicable, indescribable.
Again I failed.

Striking. Like Roquelaure’s macabre.
Surreal. Like Gaiman’s reveries.
Eternal. Like Neruda’s eloquence.

Tonight, the Air again wisped between my fingers.

I am still attempting.

I know I can’t,
But still I try.

How do you catch the Air?
With your hands?
With your whispers?

No.

Don't try because you can’t.

She catches you.
