Filipinos can't get no respect

Its like the analogy, African-americans to the USA then Filipinos to the World

Lunch monitor tells student his eating habits are ‘disgusting’

A Roxboro woman has filed a formal complaint with a local school board after her son was disciplined by a lunch program monitor at Ecole Lalande for eating in what she says is a customary Filipino manner.

Luc Cagadoc’s table behaviour is traditionally Filipino; he fills his spoon by pushing the food on his plate with a fork, his mother, Maria Theresa Gallardo, says. But after being punished by his school’s lunch program monitor more than 10 times this year for his mealtime conduct — including his technique — the seven-year-old told Gallardo said last week that he was too embarrassed to eat his dinner.“Mommy, I don’t want to eat anymore,” Gallardo says Luc told her at the kitchen table April 11. “My teacher is telling me that eating with a spoon and fork is yucky and disgusting.”When he eats with both a spoon and fork, instead of only one utensil, the Grade 2 student said the lunch monitor moves him to a table to sit by himself.

Upset over Luc’s story, Gallardo confronted the lunchtime caregiver the next day and on April 13, she telephoned the school’s principal, Normand Bergeron. His reaction brought her to tears, she says. “His response was shocking to me,” Gallardo, who moved to Montreal from the Philippines in 1999, told The Chronicle. “He said, ‘Madame, you are in Canada. Here in Canada you should eat the way Canadians eat.’“I find it very prejudiced and it’s racist. He’s supposed to be acting like a professional. This is supposed to be a free country with free expressions of culture and religion. This is how we eat; we eat with a fork and spoon.”

Luc’s father, Aldrin Cagadoc, was also surprised by the comment. “I can’t believe even the principal would say that,” he said. “A person of that calibre, I wouldn’t expect him to say that.”Gallardo, who operates a day care out of her Roxboro home and is close to completing her studies in early childhood education, wrote a letter last week and lodged a formal complaint to the Commission scolaire Marguerite Bourgeoys (CSMB) yesterday. She disagrees with the lunch monitor’s approach to teaching children how to eat and says it is emotionally abusive to Luc.

When she questioned Bergeron about punishing students for their table habits, she says he replied that, “If your son eats like a pig he has to go to another table because this is the way we do it and how we’re going to do it every time.”But Bergeron says it was Luc’s eating technique combined with his behaviour at the table that was inappropriate that day, which is why he was moved. “Luc can be turbulent,” he said yesterday. “Like other children, he is frequently in situations where we have to intervene. It’s normal, he’s a child. He is in a period of learning.

”The principal of the 387-student Roxboro school said he explained his position on using two utensils to Gallardo during their telephone conversation. “I said, ‘Here, this is not the manner in which we eat.’“I don’t necessarily want students to eat with one hand or with only one instrument, I want them to eat intelligently at the table,” he said. “I want them to eat correctly with respect for others who are eating with them. That’s all I ask. Personally, I don’t have any problems with it, but it is not the way you see people eat every day. I have never seen somebody eat with a spoon and a fork at the same time.”CSMB spokesman Brigitte Gauvreau says the board will not comment — due to confidentiality procedures — until Gallardo’s complaint is filed and she makes a public statement.

I read about this last week and initially, I couldn't seem to wrap my mind around the concept of someone being punished for using both utensils. Only the stupidest of stupids would say that it's disgusting to use both.

And that crap about, ‘Madame, you are in Canada. Here in Canada you should eat the way Canadians eat’ is a load of bull. Eating with two utensils will not cause a war in Canada.

'I have never seen somebody eat with a spoon and a fork at the same time.' Somebody should sit in front of him and eat with chopsticks. Who knows, he might just expire on the spot.

Just my two cents though -- I don't really agree with your title. Makes it sound like the guy was targeting Filipinos specifically. Using both utensils is a practice in other countries, too. I think this guy was just being a moron who is against all things non-Canadian.

I'd like to take a spoon to his eye and show him how useful the utensil can be. People with his sort of small-mindedness should be neutered to prevent a possible increase in stupidity.

I hope this situation generates enough bad press that he'll realize what a putz he's being.

Yes, I agree the disciplinarian was an ignorant tool. Concerning the title though, I think filipinos are just the same as everyone other citizens of other countries. You get good stereotypes and bad stereotypes. Here in New Zealand, filipinos are always regarded as romantics (a notion which I probably help confirm to the eyes of others).

And like any other place, you'll always get ignorant and borderline racist people. I remember when I first got here 2 years ago, I got sick after a couple of months. The family I was staying with, instead of asking what's wrong or attempting to help, got angry at me for being sick. Apparently every sick asian have meningitis (if i spelled that right), never mind that I've never been in a country that had an outbreak of meningitis.

The lesson is, in this vast world of diverse human beings, you'll get dumb people, ignorant people and once in a while you get unbelievable people who take offense to eating with a spoon and a fork.

A burning desire in me is screaming to vent my ire on this article but no words would come out. The least that I could say is that I too share the same sentiments as the comments above.

Now for me, the salt on the wound was the part where the principal deemed the boy's behavior as a matter that needed intervention, and saying that it's just normal. That's just plain bigotry.

Never heard of that analogy before... But do know that Filipinos are the most racist people I know. I've been to over 55 countries (military), and they are the most racist by far. They all want white skin. They all hate their flat noses. Some will tell you they're Hawaiian because they're ashamed to be Filipino. They are the #1 skin-whitening consumers in the world. They lie when getting out of the military to obtain disability. They didn't build the greatest country ever to exist (African Americans did), they didn't die for civil rights (African Americans did), they don't protect America in disproportionate numbers (African Americans do). They've done absolutely NOTHING for America, but want every benefit there is, whether they're entitled or not. I'm elated that our next Commander-in-Chief will be Black! Filipino mothers tell their daughters not to marry Black, but whenever I see Filipinos, they try to talk just like us, walk just like us, sing just like us, dance just like us... Hell, they wanna be just like us more than anybody else on this planet. YOU CAN'T BE US! We're the best lovers, athletes, entertainers etc in the world. How many Olympic medals have Filipinos won? How many Grammy's or Oscar's have Filipnos won? Filipinos don't even wanna be Filipino. They are the laughing stock of the World. They have nothing to offer but whore gold-digging parasites. Your politicians steal all your money. Your women marry 80 year old men for their money. You have no respect in this world.

I can't believe that I'm married to a Pinay... But then again, she's not like the stereotypical Filipino. She thinks there's nothing greater in the world than a strong Black man! And I prove it to her every nite!

The Philippines and Georgia were the only countries that when polled voted McCain over Obama. My wife told me that Filipinos didn't vote for Obama because he's black.
If I couldn't be black, I'd rather die! Maybe Filipinos aren't happy for their beautiful caramel skin, but we strong African decendants love our skin! So does my Asawa-ko! Your country is pathetic... You try to be just like America, but it's comical. I'm glad you vaoted against Obama. As usual, your lack of intelligence and your profound racism again leaves you outside looking in. You are not part of this historic event since you chose someone for their skin color versus the content of their character. Filipinos....once again not recognized as part of the modern world...
